We want you to be aware of four new scams that focus on Seniors.

The first scam is when someone calls and offers you a free grocery card. If you are a Medicaid/Medicare Dual MAPD member or if you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or a heart problem, then you know you receive a card that allows you to buy healthy foods. All the rest of us are not eligible for this type of plan. However, they try to put you on a Chronic plan, and then you are kicked off in 30-60 days because you don’t qualify, so they call you back and offer to move you to a new plan and you lose your old plan and your Medicare agent.  If you have diabetes or a heart problem and want to know more about chronic plans (also called C-SNPs), please call us at 405-473-8626.

The second scam is when someone calls and tells you there is a problem with your plan and you must contact them at once, but they are not your agent. This is nothing more than a bait-and-switch scheme. If there is an issue with your insurance plan, you will receive a call from us (your agent) and a letter from your insurance company. FYI, if you are on a MAPD plan then per Federal law no one is supposed to be calling you this time of year.

The third scam is called a” Charity” scam. This is where someone calls and asks you to give money to a cause, such as the “Wildfire Fund” to help Oklahomans. The problem is you don't know if it’s a scam or a legitimate charity. Your state Attorney General's Office can help you. They are happy to tell you if this is a scam or a legitimate charity. Here in Oklahoma, that number is 405-522-1012.

The last scam has to do with your checking account. A company will send you a small check via mail saying that you won a prize. They also say that you are such a good customer that they want to send you a gift of another larger check. If you deposit this small check, then they have your checking routing and account number and can steal your money. Your best bet is if you don’t know who sent you the check then don’t deposit it.

If you have questions on any of these scams, then please call Senior Benefits Consulting at 405-473-8626.
